Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem made history by winning the country’s first-ever individual Olympic gold medal in the men’s javelin throw final at the Paris Olympics 2024.

The 27-year-old athlete broke down in tears as he achieved a remarkable feat, launching a 92.97-meter throw to set a new Olympic record.

Nadeem’s victory marked a significant milestone for Pakistan, as he became the first individual athlete to win a gold medal in the country’s history. The previous gold medals won by Pakistan were in hockey, with the last one being in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games.

The javelin ace’s throw surpassed the previous Olympic record held by Norway’s Andreas Thorkildsen, set at the 2008 Beijing Games.

Nadeem’s win not only brought home the first Olympic gold medal in 40 years but also ended Pakistan’s 32-year wait for an Olympic medal. The last time Pakistan won an Olympic medal was in 1992, when the national hockey team clinched bronze at the Barcelona Olympics.

A viral video showed Nadeem, wrapped in the Pakistani flag, overcome with emotion as he shed happy tears.

In a press conference following the victory, Arshad Nadeem talked about his journey, saying that he wanted to be a cricketer and played as a fast bowler but couldn’t continue due to lack of support.
