Man rescued alive after spending 2 months adrift
A 46-year-old Russian man Mikhail Pechugan has been found alive after being missing for over two months in the Sea of Okhotsk.
Pechugan was rescued by a fishing boat crew on Monday, having drifted nearly 1,000 kilometers from his starting point.
Pechugan’s wife expressed her shock and gratitude, saying, “We don’t know much yet, only that he’s alive… It feels like a miracle.”
She revealed that her husband had weighed around 100kg before the trip but lost half his body weight during the 67-day ordeal.
Pechugan, his brother, and 15-year-old nephew set off on a sea adventure with food supplies for two weeks.
However, their journey took a tragic turn, and the brother and nephew perished. Pechugan’s daughter had initially planned to join them but decided against it at the last moment.
Rescue helicopters had searched for the group after they were reported missing, but to no avail. It wasn’t until a fishing boat passed near the Kamchatka Peninsula that Pechugan was spotted shouting, “I have no strength left.”
Experts attribute Pechugan’s survival to catching fish and preserving remaining supplies. He is currently recovering in a hospital, with doctors describing his condition as “somewhat stable.”
Russian authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the small boat’s sudden disappearance.
“We are grateful for Mikhail’s survival and extend our condolences to the families of his brother and nephew,” said a Russian official.
