King Charles heckled by lawmaker during Australia trip

King Charles III faced a interruption during his speech at Australia’s Parliament House in Canberra, as Aboriginal senator Lidia Thorpe accused him of “genocide” against Indigenous people.
Thorpe, an independent lawmaker from Victoria, boldly approached the stage, shouting, “This is not your land, you are not my king! You committed genocide against our people.”
She demanded that the monarch return stolen land, bones, skulls, babies, and people, labeling him a “genocidalist.”
The heated exchange lasted about a minute before security escorted Thorpe away. King Charles and other attendees, including Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, remained seated and silent throughout the incident.
This confrontation occurred during Charles’ first visit to Australia since ascending to the throne in 2022, and the first visit by a British monarch since 2011.
Thorpe later explained to the BBC that she wanted to send a “clear message” to the monarch, emphasizing that to be sovereign, one must be of the land, which Charles is not.
