Karachi is poised to receive a boost in its energy sector, as KEPCO (Korean Electric Power Company) has proposed supplying electricity to K-Electric at a competitive rate of Rs9.8 per unit.

The initiative aims to address the city’s persistent electricity challenges, including high rates and frequent load shedding, particularly during the summer months.

The proposal, which is based on an exchange rate of Rs288.65 per US dollar, translates to a cost of 3.4 US cents per kilowatt-hour.

The solar energy project is planned for installation in Deh Halkani, located in Karachi’s South District, and is expected to offer significant relief to the city’s residents once it receives final approval from the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA).

K-Electric, Karachi’s primary electricity provider, has also outlined plans for future renewable energy projects, including the development of 640 MW of renewable and environmentally friendly energy capacity in the coming years.

This strategy is aimed at reducing the city’s reliance on non-renewable energy sources while meeting the growing demand for electricity.

However, a public hearing by NEPRA to discuss K-Electric’s renewable energy plans has been postponed. Originally scheduled for today, the hearing was delayed due to potential law and order concerns in Islamabad.

If approved, the solar energy project proposed by KEPCO is expected to provide a reliable, cost-effective power supply to Karachi, offering both economic and environmental benefits.

The initiative is seen as a crucial step in addressing the city’s energy challenges and improving the overall power supply for its residents.
