Lewis Hamilton looks to avoid unwanted record in Mercedes farewell

05 December, 2024 12:48

Legendary Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton is looking to avoid an unwanted record as he gears up for his farewell race with Mercedes in the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

This will be Lewis Hamilton’s record 246th and final start for Mercedes this Sunday.

The British driver is set to join Ferrari in 2025 after spending 12 seasons, 84 wins and six world titles with Mercedes. Statistically, he is the most successful driver-team partnership.

But for Hamilton, he is facing a near-impossible challenge to avoid his lowest-ever placing in an F1 drivers’ championship.

Currently sitting at the seventh place at the table with 211 points, this is his lowest ever driver’s standing.

He is 24 points behind teammate George Russell, who is in sixth spot.

Hamilton has never finished lower than sixth in the drivers’ standings in his career, but such have been his struggles with the W15, he is set to break the unwanted record. It would be a near impossible task for him to takeover Russell in his final race.

Meanwhile, Ferrari could welcome Hamilton as the reigning constructors’ champions. For that they need to out-score McLaren by 21 points if wins at Yas Marina or by 22 if it does not to land a 17th constructors’ title.
