Four Israeli soldiers killed in southern Lebanon

Four Israeli reserve soldiers were killed in southern Lebanon on Sunday, according to a statement from the Israeli military.
The soldiers, who were part of the 226th Reserve Paratroopers Brigade of the 9263rd Battalion, were killed in what the military described as an “operational accident” while searching for Hezbollah weapons.
The incident occurred in the Labbouneh area during an operation to scan a tunnel. The military’s initial investigation indicated that a Hezbollah weapons cache detonated, leading to the deaths of the soldiers.
Since October 7, 2023, at least 813 Israeli soldiers have been killed in the ongoing conflict in Gaza and Lebanon, according to military figures.
The military operation follows the fragile ceasefire agreement between Israel and Lebanon that took effect on November 27, 2023, aimed at halting 14 months of fighting between the Israeli army and Hezbollah.
The ceasefire has been characterized as fragile, with Lebanon documenting around 160 violations by Israel.
As part of the agreement, Israel is required to withdraw its forces south of the Blue Line, the de facto border, in phases, while the Lebanese army is expected to deploy in southern Lebanon within 60 days.
The US and France are overseeing the implementation of the agreement, though enforcement mechanisms remain unclear.
