Real Madrid to rename iconic Santiago Bernabeu
Real Madrid are reportedly set to rename their iconic stadium Santiago Bernabeu for the first time since 1955.
According to Spanish outlet Marca, Los Blancos are looking to change name of their iconic ground from Santiago Bernabeu to The Bernabeu due to commercial and marketing reasons.
It has been nearly 70 years since it was first named the Santiago Bernabeu back on January 04, 1955.
It was named after the club’s former player, manager, and president of the same name. It has since become one of the most famous sporting stadiums in the world.
Bernabeu was Madrid’s president for nearly 35 years, during which time the club won six European Cups, 16 league titles, six Spanish cups, and many more trophies.
He also reportedly helped Manchester United rebuild its team following the Munich air disaster in 1958.
Bernabéu signed Alfredo Di Stéfano, Gento, Santamaría, Pirri, Juanito, Kopa and Puskás, among many others, but most importantly he created a myth, a reputation and an idea of Real Madrid that struck fear into any team around the world.
