Bilawal inaugurates first segment of Karachi’s Malir Expressway
PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari inaugurated the first section of the highly anticipated Malir Expressway on Saturday, marking a significant milestone in Sindh’s largest public-private partnership (PPP) project.
The newly-constructed high-speed corridor, spanning 40 kilometers, has been named after PPP founder “Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto” by the Sindh government.
The expressway connects Korangi Creek Avenue to the M-9 Motorway near Kathore, providing a crucial link for commuters and significantly reducing travel time.
Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, accompanied by Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, drove along the state-of-the-art corridor, which features a three-lane dual-carriageway with modern, access-controlled infrastructure. During the drive, Bilawal paid a toll of Rs100, as part of the formal opening.
The inauguration ceremony was held at the Qayyumabad Interchange, where officials confirmed that the expressway would have a toll plaza to manage traffic.
The toll rates are set at Rs100 for cars and jeeps, and Rs200 for heavy vehicles.
The expressway will be accessible to commercial vehicles, cars, jeeps, and buses, but motorcycles and rickshaws will not be permitted. The launch of the Malir Expressway is expected to significantly ease congestion and improve transportation across Karachi.
