BLA looting and law enforcement response highlight security challenges in Balochistan

11 January, 2025 20:55

A spate of violent incidents involving the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) has raised concerns over the group’s growing desperation as security forces tighten their grip on the province. Recent reports reveal the looting of businesses in Zehri Bazaar and Kolpur, coupled with attacks on public buildings and banks, underscoring the BLA’s strategy to destabilize Balochistan.

In Kolpur, swift action by security forces resulted in the elimination of two terrorists attempting to flee the scene. Officials assert that this incident demonstrates the BLA’s dwindling strength and diminishing operational capacity. “These acts of plundering show their desperation as they continue to lose ground,” a security source stated.

Observers point out that the BLA’s anti-progress agenda is evident in their repeated targeting of development projects, including those linked to the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). These actions aim to disrupt economic progress and regional stability. Security analysts further highlight the group’s connection to foreign influences, citing evidence such as Indian intelligence agency RAW’s alleged support. Past cases, including the capture of Kulbhushan Jadhav and reports of BLA leaders receiving medical treatment in India, strengthen claims of foreign backing.

Meanwhile, narratives promoted by Indian social media accounts have been accused of amplifying BLA propaganda and spreading disinformation. Experts warn that such campaigns seek to manipulate public opinion and undermine Pakistan’s efforts to foster development in Balochistan.

Security forces have emphasized that despite the BLA’s sabotage efforts, numerous infrastructure and development initiatives have been successfully implemented in the region, improving the quality of life for residents.

Additionally, officials have raised concerns over proxies such as the Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC) and Balochistan Liberation Front (BLF), which are believed to shield criminal elements under the pretext of advocacy. Notably, individuals like Wadood Satakzai’s sister and Mahrang Baloch have participated in protests alleged to be linked to families of terrorists. Authorities claim such groups mask their involvement in militant activities while attempting to garner international sympathy.

Security experts stress that while progress has been made in countering militancy, sustained efforts are required to address the root causes of unrest and ensure long-term stability in Balochistan.
