11 killed in west India rail accident: local media

At least 11 people died and five others injured in a rail accident took place in Indian state of Maharashtra when they disembarked from their train, fearing a fire, and were hit by another train passing on the adjacent track, local media reported.
Railway officials told media that someone had pulled the train’s emergency alarm chain, causing it to stop, after which several passengers disembarked onto the adjacent tracks and were mowed down by another passing train.
Senior railways official in Nashik region, Praveen Gedam, told ANI news agency: “As per the information, 11 people have died in the accident and 5 others are injured.”
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said ambulances had been sent to the site and arrangements were being made to treat the wounded.
Taking to X, he said: “Emergency equipment like glass cutters, floodlights etc have also been kept ready. ”
Indian railways, the fourth largest train network in the world, is undergoing a $30 billion upgrade. The project is a part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s push to boost connectivity.
However, rail accidents in the last two years have tarnished its image.
