Trade war: China to move WTO against Trumps’ tariff

02 February, 2025 12:24

China on Sunday slammed the Trump administration for imposition of a long-threatened 10 per cent tariff on it’s imports while leaving the door open for negotiations with the United States that could avoid a deepening conflict.

The country’s commerce and finance ministries said that Beijing will move the World Trade Organisation against President Trump’s tariff and take unspecified countermeasures in response to the new tariffs.

The Chinese response used more measured language it has used in recent weeks.

Yesterday, Trump had ordered 25 per cent tariffs on Mexican and Canadian imports and 10 per cent on goods from China.

He said that China needed to stanch the flow of fentanyl into the United States.

In a statement, China’s commerce ministry said that Trump’s move seriously violates international trade rules. The ministry urged the US to engage in frank dialogue.

Experts said that if China files a lawsuit with the WTO it would be a largely symbolic move. In the past, Beijing had also taken the issue of tariffs on Chinese-made electric vehicles by the European Union to the WTO.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning has been saying for weeks that Beijing believes there is no winner in a trade war.
