Govt withdraws decision to raise electricity tariff for consumers using 200 units
The government has withdrawn the decision to increase the electricity tariff for consumers using 200 units.
The federal Cabinet approved withdrawing the increase in electricity tariff for consumers using 200 units. Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif got approved the circulation summary from the federal cabinet on emergency basis.
According to the government’s decision, relief will be given to consumers with 200 units per month for July to September 2024 and the government will give subsidy of about Rs50 billion to provide relief on tariff.
Sources said the tariff per unit for lifeline customers with 50 units per month will remain at Rs3.95 and the tariff per unit for lifeline customers from 51 to 100 units per month will remain at Rs7.74.
Earlier this month, the government made life more difficult for the people suffering from inflation and made electricity more expensive to please the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
According to reports, the price of electricity has been increased by Rs3.32 per unit, which will be applicable from this month.
A formal notification in this regard has also been issued by the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA).
The power regulator had sent a summary to the federal government to increase the basic tariff of electricity by Rs 5.72 per unit.
Nepra had decided to increase the basic tariff of electricity for the financial year 2024-25 and decided to implement the increase in electricity tariff from July 1, 2024.
Sources further said that the authority had approved the average basic tariff of electricity from Rs 29.78 to Rs 35.50 per unit while the federal cabinet’s decision was sent to NEPRA for a uniform tariff.
