More rains likely as Cyclone Asna moves away from Sindh
Torrential rains lashed out Karachi and parts of Sindh on Saturday morning as Cyclone Asna intensified in the Arabian Sea.
The city saw school closures and weather advisories on Friday after a night of sporadic rainfall.
On Friday night, according to the Pakistan Metrological Department, the cyclone was about approximately 120km south of Karachi, 180km southwest of Thatta, 250km southeast of Ormara, and 440km east-southeast of Gwadar.
“The system is likely keep moving initially west-northwestwards and then west-southwestwards,” the advisory stated.
However, under its influence rains and thundershowers with few heavy falls and accompanied with squally winds was likely in Karachi division, Badin, Thatta, Sujawal, Hyderabad, Tando Muhammad Khan, Tando Allah Yar, Matiari, Jamshoro and Dadu districts of Sindh till August 31.
Similar weather conditions are forecast for the districts of Hub, Lasbella, Awaran, Kech, and Gwadar in Balochistan until September 1.
It warned that the heavy rains may cause waterlogging in low-lying areas.
The Met Office said that sea conditions are likely to remain rough/very rough with squally winds of 60-70 Km/hour gusting 80Km/hour.
However, it advised fishermen of Sindh not to venture into sea till 31 August and those of Balochistan till 1st September.
“PMD’s cyclone warning center, Karachi is closely monitoring the system and will issue the update accordingly,” it added.
