Born on March 22, 1952, in Iperu, Ogun State, Nigeria, Doyin Okupe received his early education at St. Jude’s School in Ebute Metta, Lagos.

He later attended Igbobi College in Yaba, Lagos, a prestigious institution known for nurturing future leaders. Pursuing a career in medicine, he earned a medical degree from the University of Ibadan, Oyo State, in 1976.

Medical Career

Dr. Okupe had an illustrious career in medicine, working in both government and private hospitals, including St. Nicholas Hospital in Lagos.

He co-founded the Royal Cross Medical Centre in Obalende, Lagos, with colleagues Seyi Roberts and Ladi Okuboyejo. Serving as the Managing Director, he played a key role in establishing the facility as a reputable healthcare institution. In 1988, he launched Life Mirror, Nigeria’s first health-focused newspaper, to promote health awareness.

Political Career

Dr. Okupe transitioned into politics, making his first major move in 1983 when he contested for a seat in the House of Representatives under the National Party of Nigeria (NPN). During the Third Republic, he served as the National Publicity Secretary of the National Republican Convention (NRC).

His government roles included serving as Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to President Olusegun Obasanjo (1999–2007) and later as Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs to President Goodluck Jonathan (2012–2015).

He was also instrumental in various presidential campaigns, working closely with leaders such as Olusegun Obasanjo, Goodluck Jonathan, Atiku Abubakar, Bukola Saraki, and Peter Obi. In 2023, he served as the Director-General of Peter Obi’s presidential campaign under the Labour Party.

Personal Life and Challenges

Dr. Okupe was married to Aduralere Okupe, and they had seven children, including Bolu Okupe, who gained media attention in 2021 for publicly coming out as gay. Despite facing political challenges, including detention under General Sani Abacha’s regime in 1996, he remained a steadfast advocate for democracy and good governance.
