Isaac Mutuma M’Ethingia has officially taken office as the fourth Governor of Meru County following the impeachment of his predecessor, Kawira Mwangaza, in 2024. Born into a family with a legacy of leadership, Isaac Mutuma is the son of Mzee Paul M’Ethingia, a former chairman of the Njuri Ncheke and the Kenya Council of Elders. His father’s influence played a crucial role in shaping his leadership values.

Mutuma holds a Master’s Degree in Governance and Ethics from Mount Kenya University, strengthening his expertise in public administration and governance.

Additionally, he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Theology from Kenya Methodist University, emphasizing his dedication to spiritual and community development. His Higher Diploma in Forensic Psychology and Criminology from the Kenya Institute of Studies in Criminal Justice further highlights his interest in justice and rehabilitation.

Career in Public Service

Mutuma served in the Kenya Prisons Service for 19 years, rising to the rank of Senior Sergeant and playing a key role in inmate rehabilitation programs. He was also actively involved in child rights advocacy through Plan International and served as a Youth Representative for Habitat for Humanity in the Mount Kenya region.

Spiritual Leadership and Political Journey

An ordained Reverend in the Methodist Churches of Kenya, Mutuma has been deeply engaged in spiritual leadership and community development.

His political career began in the 2022 General Elections when he was selected as the running mate of Kawira Mwangaza, who was elected as Meru County Governor. However, their working relationship faced challenges, leading to conflicts over governance issues.

After Mwangaza’s impeachment in 2024, Mutuma automatically assumed the position of Governor of Meru County, taking the oath of office in early 2025.
