Putin calls US strikes on Iran unfair, vows backing for Tehran
Russian President Vladimir Putin has strongly criticized the recent US and Israeli attacks on Iran, calling them “completely unjustified and provocative.” He made these comments during a meeting with Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi at the Kremlin, according to Al-Jazeera.
Putin said that Russia fully supports the Iranian people in this difficult time and highlighted Russia’s commitment to international law and peace in the Middle East.
Iran Thanks Russia for Its Support
Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi thanked Putin for Russia’s consistent backing. He said that “Russia stands on the right side of history” and brought personal messages from Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and President Masoud Pezeshkian, expressing gratitude for Moscow’s diplomatic and peace efforts.
Khamenei Sends Letter Asking for More Russian Help
According to Reuters, Araghchi also gave Putin a letter from Ayatollah Khamenei, asking for stronger Russian support. A senior Iranian official said the current level of help is not enough. He added, “We want Russia to take a more open stance and give Iran meaningful political and strategic assistance.”
Russia and Iran Now Closer on Regional Issues
Russian and Iranian officials said they are now coordinating their positions in response to the growing tensions after the US targeted Iranian nuclear sites. The Kremlin confirmed that three key facilities were damaged in the strikes.
Russia also expressed concern about more countries being drawn into the conflict and said it’s watching the situation closely.
Putin Was Not Informed About the Strikes
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that US President Donald Trump did not inform Putin before launching the strikes. While the two leaders had discussed the region earlier, there was no mention of planned military action.
Peskov added that Russia is ready to help bring peace, but they are waiting for clear diplomatic requests from Iran. He said, “We’re ready to support stability in the region, but we will act based on Iran’s specific needs.”
