Who is Gout Gout? Australia’s Teenage Sprint Sensation Shattering Records and Expectations

25 June, 2025 14:38

At just 17 years old, Australian sprinter Gout Gout has emerged as one of the most exciting young athletes on the global athletics scene. Known for his electrifying speed and commanding presence on the track, Gout has already captured the attention of fans, coaches, and pundits worldwide.

A Breakthrough Performance

Gout’s international breakthrough came at the prestigious Golden Spike meeting in Ostrava, Czech Republic, where he set a new Australian record in the 200m with an astonishing time of 20.02 seconds on his senior international debut. This performance marked a significant milestone in his career, highlighting his rapid rise from youth standout to elite contender.

Early Life and Background

Born in Queensland, Australia, Gout comes from a large family of seven children. His parents are originally from South Sudan, and his name is pronounced “Gwot,” reflecting its original spelling “Guot” before transliteration from Arabic altered it during his childhood.

Gout’s talent was first spotted by his school coach, Di Sheppard, who has been mentoring him since he was 13 years old. Balancing his school life with an emerging professional athletic career, Gout is just beginning to take his first steps onto the international stage.

How fast is Gout Gout?

From a young age, Gout has demonstrated exceptional sprinting ability. At 14, he set the Australian under-16 record for the 100m, running 10.57 seconds. By 15, he had also claimed the 200m under-16 record with a time of 20.87 seconds.

His progress continued in 2024, winning the Australian under-20 100m title in 10.48 seconds, and earning a silver medal in the 200m at the World Under-20 Championships in Lima. Later that year, he dominated the GPS Track & Field Championships in Queensland, winning both the 200m and 400m events.

Following these successes, Gout turned professional and secured a sponsorship deal with Adidas. His under-18 record-breaking 200m run, clocking in as the fifth fastest time ever by any Australian athlete, positioned him as only the second athlete to surpass Usain Bolt’s under-18 200m record.

Personal Bests and Sprinting Range

Gout’s versatility across sprint distances is remarkable. His personal best times include:

  • 60m: 6.98 seconds

  • 100m: 10.17 seconds

  • 200m: 20.02 seconds

  • 400m: 46.20 seconds

This range showcases not only speed but also endurance, making him a promising contender across multiple sprint events.

Comparisons to Usain Bolt and Mentorship

Gout’s long strides, tall stature, and fluid running style have drawn inevitable comparisons to Usain Bolt, the legendary Jamaican sprinter. In late 2024, Bolt himself reached out via Instagram after seeing videos of Gout’s performances, calling him “young me.”

Gout has welcomed the comparison but remains focused on carving out his own legacy. “I do see it,” he told Nine Network. “My stride length is pretty long, my knee height is pretty high and just the amount of tallness I get when I’m running. But I’m just me trying to be me… I think I’ve done that pretty well.”

Honoring Past Legends

In December, Gout broke the long-standing Australian 200m record once held by Peter Norman—a sprinter famous for his 1968 Olympic protest alongside Tommie Smith and John Carlos. Norman’s family praised Gout, calling him “a star” and expressing that their father “would have loved” seeing his record surpassed.

Looking Ahead: World Championships and Beyond

Ostrava marked Gout’s first senior race outside Australia and his first competition in Europe. He is now preparing for the 2025 Monaco Diamond League meet, aiming to fine-tune his performance ahead of the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, scheduled for September.

“The main goal of the season is obviously World Championships,” Gout said. “Let’s see what I can do on the world stage against professional athletes. Hopefully I can run fast and perform well.”

Looking even further ahead, Gout will be 20 years old at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games—an ideal age to be reaching his peak and possibly contending for Olympic medals.

Gout Gout’s rapid ascent is a story of raw talent, dedication, and the dreams of a young athlete poised to shine on the world stage. With his speed, work ethic, and growing international experience, Australia—and the world—will be watching this sprinting prodigy closely.
