Who is Daniel Gutierrez? Mexican mayor marries crocodile in age-old ritual
Daniel Gutierrez, the mayor of San Pedro Huamelula, took part in a unique and ancient ceremony on July 1, 2025. He symbolically married a female crocodile. This strange but important ritual has been part of the town’s Indigenous tradition for over 230 years.
The ceremony is believed to bring rain, good harvests, and peace between nature and people. It also honors the deep connection between two Indigenous groups in the region: the Chontal and the Huave.
In the ritual, the crocodile represents a Huave princess. The mayor, as the Chontal king, marries her to celebrate the harmony between these communities. This tradition started long ago when a Chontal king married a Huave princess, according to local history.
Before the wedding, the crocodile is treated with great respect. The reptile is dressed in a white bridal gown and carried through the town. People celebrate by dancing and greeting the crocodile. Her snout is tied safely to protect everyone.
The wedding takes place at the town hall. After the ceremony, the mayor and the crocodile dance to traditional music. Mayor Gutierrez said, “We are happy because we celebrate the union of two cultures. People are content.”
The ceremony ends with the mayor kissing the crocodile’s snout. Locals believe this act invites blessings from nature and ensures good luck for the year.
This year’s ceremony follows a similar event two years ago when the previous mayor, Victor Hugo Sosa, held the same ritual. The event draws visitors and keeps alive a very special part of Oaxaca’s cultural heritage.
