Who is Rushanara Ali? Homelessness Minister Quits After London Rent Row

08 August, 2025 11:27

Labour MP Rushanara Ali has resigned as homelessness minister after facing a backlash over a rent hike on a property she owns in east London. The scandal erupted when it was revealed she raised the rent by £700-a-month shortly after removing her tenants.

The property, located near the Olympic Village, was home to four tenants until November last year. They were given four months’ notice to leave after Ms Ali said she intended to sell the townhouse. When a buyer could not be found, the house returned to the rental market — at a much higher price.

Who is Rushanara Ali?

Ms Ali, 50, moved to Britain from Bangladesh at the age of seven. She grew up in London’s East End and was the first in her family to attend university, studying Philosophy, Politics and Economics at Oxford’s St John’s College.

She was elected Labour MP for Bethnal Green and Bow in 2010 — becoming the first British Bangladeshi in Parliament. She now represents the newly created Bethnal Green and Stepney seat. Over the years, she has held several shadow minister roles, including in international development and education.

In 2023, she became shadow minister for investment and small business. After Labour’s election win in 2024, she was appointed minister for building safety and homelessness. But her building safety role was removed months later after concerns from Grenfell Tower survivors over potential conflicts of interest linked to her attendance at events sponsored by building material firms.

Past Challenges and Public Backlash

Ms Ali has faced threats and abuse before. In 2020, she endured a campaign of racist harassment from a stalker who sent hundreds of emails and made threats to blow up her offices. She also faced protests in 2023 after abstaining on a Gaza ceasefire vote, which contributed to her majority dropping from 37,500 in 2019 to just 1,689 in the 2024 election.

The Rent Scandal

The i Paper reported that within weeks of her tenants leaving, Ms Ali’s property was advertised again with the increased rent. Critics called it “staggering hypocrisy” given her government role on homelessness.

Kevin Hollinrake, Conservative Party chairman, urged her to quit. Tom Darling, of the Renters’ Reform Coalition, called the case “mind-boggling” and said Ms Ali should not be involved in decisions affecting tenants, especially as the government considers reducing the re-letting ban after eviction from 12 months to six months under the Renters’ Rights Bill.

Her Resignation

Within hours of the story breaking, Ms Ali stepped down. In her resignation letter to Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, she insisted she had followed all legal requirements and taken her responsibilities seriously. However, she admitted the row had become a distraction, saying: “It is clear that continuing in my role will be a distraction from the ambitious work of the Government. I have therefore decided to resign from my ministerial position.”
