Childhood Sweethearts Turned Life Partners

Adriana Crudo first met Leonardo when she was just a teenager in Palermo, Italy. They quickly fell in love, building dreams of a stable home and family life. Leonardo was honest early on about his unconventional career path, telling her, “I might end up in trouble.” Despite knowing the risks, Adriana stayed by his side.

The couple married in January 1974. From the beginning, Leonardo kept his criminal activities separate from their family life. He never involved Adriana in his plans, aiming to protect her from both worry and potential legal trouble.

The Heist and Adriana’s Arrest

Unbeknownst to Adriana, Leonardo and his team spent over two years planning the February 15–16, 2003 Antwerp diamond heist. While he was away on the job, Adriana reportedly called him on Valentine’s Day, unaware he was in the middle of the operation.

Days later, Leonardo invited her to travel with him to Antwerp again. But this time, both were arrested — Leonardo in the diamond district and Adriana outside a rented safehouse. She was briefly charged but later cleared of all involvement after two weeks in custody.

Life After the Trial

In 2005, Leonardo was convicted and sentenced to 10 years in prison, along with heavy fines. Adriana continued to stand by him, visiting and supporting him throughout his incarceration. Leonardo was released in 2009 under supervision but later returned to prison in 2011 for violating parole. He completed his sentence in 2017.

Now in her early 70s, Adriana lives in Turin, Italy, with Leonardo. The couple enjoys retirement, spending time with their children, grandchildren, and Adriana’s twin sister. They often travel across Italy, visiting places like Palermo, Imperia, Borgo Parrini, Castella, and Sestriere.
