Solution to Pakistan’s Water Crisis Lies in Better Planning
At Kotri Barrage and other water reservoirs, the flow of water indicates that the solution to Pakistan’s water crisis lies in better planning.
On August 9, 2025, the water flow at Kotri Barrage reached 171,846 cusecs, the highest level, sources said.
By August 18, 2025, the flow had dropped to 71,227 cusecs, which is still many times higher than the minimum required level, sources added.
At present, the outflow from Kotri Barrage is much higher than the required minimum of 5,000 cusecs, according to sources.
If proper reservoirs and canal systems were established, water could be stored to meet the year-round needs of Sindh and South Punjab, sources emphasized.
The current water flow shows that resources are available; what is needed is better planning and infrastructure, sources said.
The data makes it clear that Pakistan does not face a shortage of water, but rather a lack of systems for storing and managing its use, sources concluded.
