After Heavy Rainfall, Karachi Mayor Pushes for Climate Resilience
KARACHI: Mayor Murtaza Wahab and Deputy Mayor Salman Abdullah Murad held a press conference to talk about the heavy rain in Karachi yesterday and how the city is responding.
Mayor Wahab said that climate change is now a real problem, not just a future threat. “Even rich and developed cities are having problems with extreme weather. What happened in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa recently shows how serious this issue is,” he said.
Two Rain Spells in One Day
The mayor shared that Karachi had two rain spells yesterday—one early in the morning and the second in the afternoon. “After the first rain, our teams cleared the roads by 12 PM,” he said, thanking the emergency workers for their quick action.
Call for Long-Term Planning
Wahab said Karachi must prepare better for such weather events in the future. “We have two choices: either keep reacting to disasters or change how we deal with climate change,” he said.
He welcomed helpful suggestions from the public but asked everyone to understand that climate change is a global problem, not just a local issue. “People can criticise, but they should also see the bigger picture,” he said.
The mayor added that the government is working to make Karachi stronger against extreme weather, but everyone must work together for long-term solutions.
