Who is Ange Postecoglou? New Nottingham Forest Head Coach After Nuno Espirito Santo Sacking

Nottingham Forest confirmed the appointment of Ange Postecoglou as their new head coach, just hours after the sacking of Nuno Espirito Santo.

The 60-year-old Australian coach takes charge at the City Ground with big expectations, as Forest continue their push to establish themselves as a consistent European side.

Why Nuno Espirito Santo Was Sacked

Nuno, 51, was dismissed despite signing a new contract in June after guiding Forest into the Europa League for the first time since 1995. His public fallout with club owner Evangelos Marinakis and criticism of the summer transfer window soured relations.

Nuno leaves as Forest’s most successful manager since Frank Clark, but his strained relationship with the board forced the club to move in a new direction.

Who is Ange Postecoglou?

Postecoglou is no stranger to top-level football. He made history in 2023 as the first Australian to manage in the Premier League when he joined Tottenham Hotspur.

• In his first season, he led Spurs to a fifth-place finish, securing a Europa League spot.

• In 2024, he guided Spurs to victory in the Europa League final against Manchester United, ending their long trophy drought.

• Despite this, Spurs struggled domestically last season, finishing 17th, just above the relegation zone. Postecoglou was sacked in May 2025.

His Career Before Spurs

Before moving to England, Postecoglou coached Celtic from 2021 to 2023. He took charge after Celtic lost the title to Rangers and immediately restored dominance by winning the league in his first season.

Earlier in his career, he managed clubs in Australia and Japan, and also coached the Australian national team between 2013 and 2017, leading them to the 2014 FIFA World Cup and winning the 2015 AFC Asian Cup.

Club owner Marinakis praised the appointment, saying:
