10 September, 2025 13:03

On Tuesday, September 9, 2025, Nepal witnessed one of its darkest moments as violent protests claimed the life of Rajyalaxmi Chitrakar, wife of former Prime Minister Jhalanath Khanal. Her home in Dallu, Kathmandu, was allegedly set on fire by protesters during the nationwide unrest.

How Did Rajyalaxmi Chitrakar Die?

According to family members, demonstrators forced Rajyalaxmi inside her house before setting it ablaze. She was immediately rushed to Kirtipur Burn Hospital with severe injuries. Doctors confirmed she suffered major burns, including damage to her lungs. Despite emergency treatment, she succumbed to her injuries.

Protests Turn Deadly in Nepal

The violent protests are being described as “Gen Z protests”, largely led by young people. Demonstrators are demanding action against corruption, rising unemployment, and the controversial social media ban.

Although the ban was lifted late Monday, unrest intensified. Protesters set fire to multiple government buildings and private homes. Kathmandu airport was temporarily shut down due to security threats.

Political Leaders Targeted

Videos circulating online showed the Parliament building and homes of senior leaders in flames. The residences of:

  • President Ram Chandra Paudel

  • Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli

  • Former Premiers Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ and Sher Bahadur Deuba

were all attacked. Finance Minister Bishnu Paudel was also reportedly targeted. Some of the footage has not yet been independently verified.

Death Toll and Political Fallout

At least 19 people were killed on Monday during clashes, marking one of the deadliest crackdowns in recent years. The violence pushed Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli to resign after talks with the Nepal Army Chief.

National and International Response

President Paudel appealed for calm and restraint. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged peace and stability in Nepal. The United Nations rights chief Volker Turk condemned the violence and called for dialogue.

Meanwhile, Reporters Without Borders asked protesters not to attack journalists after the Kantipur Media Group headquarters was set ablaze. The International Crisis Group described the crisis as a major turning point in Nepal’s democratic journey.
