Portugal to Recognise Palestinian State on Sunday, September 21

Portugal will officially recognise the State of Palestine on Sunday, September 21, 2025, according to a statement released by Lisbon’s foreign ministry on Friday. The announcement comes ahead of the upcoming United Nations General Assembly, where nearly 10 other countries are also expected to make similar declarations.

Portugal Confirms Recognition of Palestine

The Portuguese government had already revealed its intention in July, citing the worsening humanitarian situation in Gaza and growing fears over Israel’s plans to annex Palestinian land. On Friday, the ministry of foreign affairs reaffirmed that the recognition will take effect on September 21.

“The ministry of foreign affairs confirms that Portugal will recognise the State of Palestine. The official declaration of recognition will be made on Sunday,” the statement said.

Other Countries Likely to Follow at UN Assembly

Alongside Portugal, several Western nations are preparing to extend recognition during the UN General Assembly. Reports suggest that Britain, Canada, and France are among the countries expected to follow this step.

The move reflects a global wave of support for Palestinian statehood as Israel’s ongoing military campaign in Gaza continues. Leaders have argued that the recognition is also a symbolic call for peace and justice in the Middle East.

Why the Recognition Matters

Lisbon stressed that the decision was based on the “extremely worrying evolution of the conflict” and the humanitarian crisis faced by civilians in Gaza. By recognising Palestine, Portugal aims to push for a political solution and discourage any further annexation of Palestinian territories.

This step adds Portugal to a growing list of nations aligning with international demands for a two-state solution.
