FBR to Impose Taxes on TikTokers and Social Media Influencers

26 September, 2025 11:03

Islamabad: The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has decided to impose taxes on TikTokers and social media influencers as part of efforts to broaden Pakistan’s tax net.

The initiative targets individuals who flaunt luxurious lifestyles and wealth on social media, allowing authorities to scrutinize their income and expenses against filed tax returns.

Recently, the FBR collected data on 100,000 individuals showcasing extravagant lifestyles online. The revenue authority has identified digital content creators and influencers as a key potential source of tax revenue.

During a meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on Finance and Revenue, Senator Faisal Vawda said the highest tax collection is expected from Punjab, due to its large number of internet users. The meeting was chaired by Senator Saleem Mandviwala.

According to the FBR, influencers displaying expensive cars, bungalows, branded clothing, and jewelry on social media will be the primary focus of this initiative.

Under the audit plan, the FBR will compare last year’s tax returns with the current year to detect any discrepancies between income and expenses. Those filing accurate and up-to-date tax returns will be exempt from any action.

The FBR stated that this measure forms part of a wider strategy to formalize Pakistan’s digital economy. Experts have welcomed the move, calling it fair and emphasizing that influencers should also contribute to the tax system.
