Why Is “Boycott Zach Bryan” Trending Online? Anti-ICE Song Lyrics and “Fading of the Red, White and Blue” Controversy Explained

07 October, 2025 10:46

Nashville: Country singer and Grammy winner Zach Bryan is under fire after previewing his new song “Bad News” on Instagram. The short clip, which included politically charged lyrics about ICE agents and the “fading of the red, white and blue,” has sparked outrage among conservative fans.

Bryan captioned the video with the same phrase, calling attention to what he described as the current state of America. In the snippet, he criticizes the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for detaining families — a move many interpret as a critique of past Trump-era policies.

However, the post quickly divided audiences. Within hours, the phrase “Boycott Zach Bryan” began trending on X (formerly Twitter), with some accusing the Oklahoma-born artist of “going woke.”

MAGA Fans Call for a Boycott

Several conservative and MAGA supporters expressed anger online. One X user wrote: “We’ve boycotted Zach Bryan. If anyone plays his music in our office, they’re fired immediately.”

Another post read: “Buh bye, Zach Bryan. Go woke, go broke.”

Many critics labeled him “un-American,” claiming he had turned his back on traditional country values. Comparisons were even drawn to the Bud Light boycott of 2023, when the beer brand faced backlash for partnering with transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney.

Fans Defend Zach Bryan’s Message

Despite the controversy, many fans rallied behind Zach, praising him for addressing a sensitive social issue that few country artists talk about.

“Whether you agree or not, Zach Bryan just touched a topic most artists are too scared to discuss,” one supporter posted.

“Swifties, Democrats, and patriots — we stand with Zach,” another wrote.

Some also noted that the singer’s message reflected empathy rather than division, arguing that “Bad News” sheds light on the human impact of immigration enforcement.

Lyrics That Sparked the Debate

In “Bad News,” Zach refers to ICE officers as “out-of-town boys,” expressing frustration with government raids and family separations: “And ICE is gonna come bust down your door / To try and build a house no one builds no more…”

The preview ends with a patriotic but melancholic line that has become the center of the controversy: “Got some bad news — the fading of the red, white, and blue.”

These words struck a nerve, with some interpreting them as anti-American, while others saw them as a lament over the country’s growing division.

A Familiar Political Storm

Zach Bryan’s controversy mirrors other celebrity-politics clashes in recent years. The backlash highlights a deep cultural divide within the country music scene, where patriotic symbolism and political commentary often collide.

Whether the outrage will affect his popularity remains uncertain, but the online debate around “Bad News” shows no sign of fading anytime soon.
