Fertiliser prices drop in Pakistan despite global rates rising
In good news for Pakistan’s agriculture sector, fertiliser prices have dropped over the past year, giving much-needed relief to farmers even as global prices have gone up sharply.
According to a report from the Ministry of National Food Security and Research (MNFSR) submitted to the Senate, urea and DAP (diammonium phosphate) make up about 85% of total fertiliser use in the country. Both types have shown either a decline or stability in prices between July 2024 and August 2025, unlike the steep rise seen globally.
The ministry’s data shows that the price of a 50-kg urea bag in Pakistan fell from Rs4,705 in July 2024 to Rs4,365 in July 2025, marking a 7.2% decrease. In contrast, global urea prices jumped 32.6%, from $348.5 to $462 per tonne.
For DAP, local prices rose slightly by 17.1%, from Rs11,352 to Rs13,031 per 50-kg bag, while international prices surged by 34.7%, from $591.9 to $787.8 per tonne.
A senior MNFSR official dismissed claims that fertiliser prices were rising in Pakistan while falling globally. He said the government and provincial authorities have worked together to stabilize the fertiliser market, ensure consistent supply, and protect farmers from global price shocks.
