Who Is Lehlogonolo Madila? Verwoerdpark Resident on Mission of Reading Revival in Alberton

10 October, 2025 12:31

Lehlogonolo Madila, popularly known as Hloni and a resident of Verwoerdpark, is on a mission to inspire Albertonians to read again. Two years ago, she founded a reading club called Reading Redefined to promote a culture of reading and see it grow further.

“Growing up, I always loved reading and during a challenging time in my life, I decided to revisit my childhood passion. Reading became my therapy, my refuge. It carried me through my darkest days and that is when I realised that if reading could heal and uplift me, it could do the same for others,” said Hloni.

The no-fee reading club operates from the Alberton Library at the Civic Centre on Alwyn Taljaard Avenue. Members are not required to pay for reading material as they receive free books, which are later discussed during club meetings.

Hloni said her main recruitment focus is on high school students and young adults in and around the Alberton area. “I took a deliberate decision to make it absolutely free. The club’s members do not have to buy anything or bring anything special. All they need to bring is their presence and willingness to grow. It is only two hours, but those two hours will truly impact and change their lives,” she said.

The next meeting of Reading Redefined is scheduled for November 1 at the Alberton Library from 10:00 to 12:00.

Those interested can join the club before the next meeting. For more information, contact Hloni on 074 790 6742 or follow @reading.redefined on TikTok to see what Alberton’s readers are up to.
