How old were D’Angelo & Angie Stone when they dated? All about their age difference & story beyond public eye

15 October, 2025 14:13

Michael Eugene Archer, globally acclaimed as D’Angelo, has died at the age of 51 following a prolonged battle with pancreatic cancer. The neo-soul luminary passed away in New York City on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, nearly six months after the death of his former partner, Angie Stone, in a fatal car accident.

A source cited by People Magazine disclosed that the singer had been hospitalized for several months prior to entering hospice care, where he spent his final two weeks. D’Angelo’s family publicly confirmed the news, issuing a statement that read:

“The shining star of our family has dimmed his light for us in this life. After a prolonged and courageous battle with cancer, we are heartbroken to announce that Michael D’Angelo Archer, known to his fans around the world as D’Angelo, has been called home, departing this life today, October 14th, 2025.”

A Notable Love Story in Neo-Soul History

D’Angelo and Angie Stone’s relationship began in the 1990s, when Stone, then in her early 30s, met a 19-year-old D’Angelo during the production of his Grammy-nominated debut album Brown Sugar (1995). The pair collaborated musically on several acclaimed tracks, including “Send It On” and “Everyday.”

Their union resulted in the birth of their son, Michael Archer II, in 1997 — known professionally as Swayvo Twain. Although their romantic relationship ended in 1999, Stone later reflected on their early years together in a 2008 interview with Essence, emphasizing how she recognized his potential long before global stardom.

“Before he became successful, there was Angie Stone from the group Vertical Hold — a strong, beautiful sister who dated somebody who had not even crossed the threshold of the industry yet,” she recounted.
“He wore glasses, had short hair, and his pants were hanging down to his butt. He was just a 19-year-old kid with big shorts, and nobody cared or saw his beauty but me.”

Stone shared a daughter, Diamon, with her former husband Rodney Stone, while D’Angelo was also father to two additional children: son Morocco and daughter Imani.

A Year of Personal Tragedy for Michael Jr.

In the wake of both parents’ deaths, Michael Archer II faces profound personal loss. People Magazine reported that Michael was by his father’s side during his final hospitalization.

A source close to the family revealed:

“Michael has been through a lot in such a short amount of time. People are really worried about Mike right now. His mom died a day after his birthday and now six months later he’s burying his dad.”

In a personal statement shared publicly, Michael expressed his grief and gratitude:

“I am grateful for your thoughts and prayers during these very difficult times, as it has been a very rough and sad year for me. I ask that you please continue to keep me in your thoughts as it will not be easy, but one thing that both my parents taught me was to be strong, and I intend to do just that.”

D’Angelo’s death marks the loss of one of modern soul’s most influential figures — an artist whose creative vision helped redefine the sound of a generation. His passing, so soon after Angie Stone’s, leaves their son Michael Jr. at the center of a deeply personal and public tragedy.
