Karachi has officially enforced a new set of speed limits across its major routes as part of the city’s efforts to regulate driving behaviour and reduce traffic violations. The updated speed limits will see motorcycles and light vehicles restricted to a maximum speed of 60 kilometres per hour, while heavy transport vehicles will face a reduced speed of 30 kilometres per hour on designated roads.
Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Traffic, Pir Muhammad Shah, confirmed that Karachi’s traffic police have introduced advanced monitoring systems, including high-tech cameras and digital enforcement tools, to ensure compliance with the new regulations. These systems will not only monitor vehicle speeds but also identify violations in real-time.
The city’s traffic department has begun fitting trackers to 10,000 heavy transport vehicles, linking them to the Traffic Regulation and Citation System (TRACS) for continuous speed monitoring. TRACS, which is already operational in 40 percent of Karachi, is integrated with more than 1,700 cameras. The system is fully active in District South, including major roads like Shahrah-e-Faisal, where it is already capturing and recording traffic violations.
E-challans have been issued across several districts, including Malir, Korangi, East, Keamari, and Central, for a range of offenses such as overspeeding, driving against traffic, signal violations, and failure to wear helmets or seat belts. The digital monitoring system is central to Karachi’s renewed focus on enforcing traffic rules, aiming to make the city’s roads safer.
In addition to this, the system will soon be expanded to industrial areas like SITE, Landhi, New Karachi, and Korangi, where further speed detection tools and camera-based surveillance will be installed. By next year, the Karachi Traffic Management System is set to be fully operational, with an additional 11,000 cameras slated for installation beginning in January 2026. This major upgrade will strengthen the city’s traffic monitoring infrastructure and further enhance regulatory compliance across Karachi.
The enforcement of speed limits and digital monitoring tools represents a significant step toward improving traffic management in the city and ensuring the safety of its residents.
