President Zardari gives assent to 27th Constitutional Amendment
ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari has given assent to the much-debated 27th Constitutional Amendment after Parliament approved it. With his signature, the amendment has officially become part of the Constitution.
A notification from the President’s House stated, “The Constitution (Twenty-Seventh Amendment) Bill, 2025 is assented to, as advised by the Prime Minister [Shehbaz Sharif], at Para-5 of the Summary.”

The development came hours after the Senate approved the amendment bill following changes made by the National Assembly a day earlier, amid protests by the opposition.
Federal Minister for Law Azam Nazeer Tarar presented the amendment bill with the tweaks approved by the upper house. The bill received 64 votes in favour and four against in the 96-member Senate, reaching the required two-thirds majority.
Senate Chairman Yousuf Raza Gilani announced:
“So the motion is carried by the votes of not less than two-thirds of the total membership of the Senate, and consequently, the bill stands passed.”
The bill was initially presented in the upper house on Monday and approved the same day. It was then sent to the National Assembly, which made some amendments. The revised bill returned to the Senate today for approval of these latest changes.
