Rising terror threat in Tirah valley raises alarm in Peshawar
Terrorist activities linked to the Khawarij militants growing inside Tirah Valley have once again raised serious security concerns for Peshawar. These groups have restarted attacks on Peshawar using their networks in Tirah.
Tirah and Peshawar are only 70 km apart, a distance that can be covered in about two hours. This close connection has made it easier for militants to travel and carry out attacks.
On 24 November, Afghan militants involved in the attack on the Federal Constabulary Headquarters in Peshawar used the route from Tirah to reach the city.
Similarly, on 26 November 2025, militants linked with Tirah destroyed a gas pipeline in Hassan Khel using an IED.
In the past, former TTP commander Hakimullah Mehsud operated his main headquarters in Tirah for a long time. From there, he organized attacks across the tribal areas, Peshawar, and other parts of Pakistan.
Recent investigations also show that Afghan nationals involved in several new attacks have connections with networks based in Tirah. Even the APS tragedy of 2014 was planned in secret centres located in this region.
Now, Tirah is once again becoming a safe haven for terrorist groups. Experts warn that if the provincial government does not act quickly, Peshawar and the entire Khyber Pakhtunkhwa region may face more attacks in the coming days.
Before any targeted military operation in Tirah, temporary relocation of local residents will be necessary for safety. Many crime–terror networks also have deep interests in this area.
Without immediate and strong action in Tirah, Peshawar will remain in serious danger. The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government and security institutions must take urgent and clear decisions to restore peace in the province.
