3I/Atlas New radio signals and “Heartbeat-Like” Jets, Sparking Curiosity

02 December, 2025 12:03

The interstellar object 3I/Atlas, currently passing through our solar system, has been attracting global attention as new data reveal unusual behaviors. Recent observations include mysterious radio readings and a jet pattern that brightens and fades in a steady rhythm, sparking curiosity among astronomers and the public alike.

Strange Radio Signals Raise Questions

Earlier this month, astronomers reported that 3I/Atlas produces a narrow radio signal at two specific frequencies, a phenomenon uncommon for comets. While scientists emphasize that this is “nothing out of the ordinary yet,” the timing of the signals — coinciding with periods of strong solar heat and pressure — has drawn attention. Some viewers speculated that the unusual clarity of the signals might be linked to the Sun’s influence.

A “Heartbeat” Jet Pattern Appears

Just days after the radio findings, a new set of images revealed a jet from 3I/Atlas that brightened and dimmed in a repeating cycle. Some experts likened the pattern to a heartbeat, noting that it repeated roughly every 16 hours. Unlike typical comets, which release gas and dust in a chaotic manner dependent on sunlight and surface activity, this jet appeared timed and orderly.

Scientists caution that no explanation is yet available for this steady cycle, though they note that natural phenomena remain the most likely cause. Nevertheless, the unusual repetition has captured public interest.

Are the Patterns Connected?

The occurrence of both the radio signal and the heartbeat-like jet in quick succession prompted speculation about a potential connection. Scientists, however, emphasize that it is too early to draw conclusions, and natural explanations remain the most plausible.

Closer Observation Expected

3I/Atlas is expected to make its closest approach to Earth on December 19. Telescopes worldwide are preparing for detailed observations to determine whether the radio signal returns, the jet continues its pulsing, or new patterns emerge as the object moves away from the Sun.

For now, 3I/Atlas remains a mystery. The repeating patterns may eventually be explained naturally, or they could provide new insights into the behavior of interstellar visitors.
