Tehran : A former Afghan security commander and outspoken critic of the Taliban, Ikramuddin Saree, was shot dead in Iran’s capital, Tehran. The incident took place on the busy Valiasr Street, one of the city’s main commercial areas.

According to foreign media reports, Ikramuddin Saree was attacked when he stepped out of his office. Unknown gunmen opened fire at close range. He sustained critical injuries during the shooting.

He was rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment. Doctors, however, could not save him. He died shortly after being admitted.

Who Was Ikramuddin Saree?

Ikramuddin Saree served in senior security positions during Afghanistan’s previous government. He worked as police chief in Takhar and Baghlan provinces. He was considered an experienced and influential security official.

After the fall of the Afghan government, Saree became a strong public critic of the Taliban. Following the Taliban’s return to power, he left Afghanistan and sought refuge in Iran.

Iranian authorities have described the killing as a targeted attack. Security agencies have launched a formal investigation. Efforts are underway to identify the attackers and determine the motive behind the shooting.

No group has claimed responsibility so far. Officials say CCTV footage from nearby areas is being reviewed.

This is not the first attack of its kind. In September, another Taliban opponent, Marouf Ghulami, a close associate of Ismail Khan, was shot dead in his office in Mashhad.

These repeated incidents have raised serious concerns about the safety of Afghan political and security figures living in Iran.

The killing of Ikramuddin Saree has once again highlighted the risks faced by former Afghan officials abroad. Analysts say such incidents could increase fear among Afghan exiles who fled after the Taliban takeover.

Investigations are ongoing, and authorities have assured that those responsible will be brought to justice.
