Islamabad is carefully observing developments in Iran and region; Pakistan’s UN envoy

Pakistan condemns Israel's aggression against Iran
Pakistan has called for restraint and diplomacy amid rising tensions involving Iran, warning that threats or the use of force could further destabilise an already fragile Middle East.
Speaking at a United Nations Security Council meeting on Thursday, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, said disputes must be resolved peacefully and in accordance with international law.
He stressed that continued hostilities and unilateral actions would only deepen instability and cause unnecessary humanitarian suffering.
Warning Against Use of Force
“The threat or use of force would only aggravate the situation and undermine regional and international peace and stability,” Ambassador Ahmad told the council.
His remarks came as tensions increased following strong statements by US President Donald Trump over possible action against Iran.
The envoy said Pakistan was closely monitoring developments in Iran and across the region, describing the situation as a serious concern at a time of already heightened tensions.
Pakistan Highlights Close Ties With Iran
Ambassador Ahmad highlighted Pakistan’s close relationship with Iran, calling it a neighbouring and brotherly country with shared historical, cultural and religious ties.
“We hope for an early normalisation of the situation in Iran and support all diplomatic efforts aimed at regional peace and stability,” he said.
“A stable and peaceful Iran is in the interest of Pakistan, the region and beyond.”
He also expressed confidence in Iran’s people and leadership to address current challenges, citing the country’s long history and resilience.
Call to Respect International Law
Pakistan reiterated that the principles of the UN Charter must be respected, particularly the prohibition on the threat or use of force against the sovereignty of states.
“Any external interference in the domestic affairs of states is inconsistent with international law,” the envoy said.
He urged all parties to show restraint and act responsibly, warning that further escalation could damage both regional and global security.
US Imposes New Sanctions on Iran
Earlier on Thursday, the United States imposed sanctions on five Iranian officials, accusing them of leading a crackdown on protests inside the country.
The US Treasury Department said the sanctions targeted senior security and law enforcement figures, including officials linked to Iran’s Supreme National Security Council and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Washington was tracking funds allegedly moved overseas by Iranian leaders and warned that the US would continue targeting those responsible for human rights abuses.
Growing Pressure on Tehran
Iran has faced widespread protests over rising prices, which later turned into one of the biggest challenges to the government since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
President Trump has repeatedly warned of possible intervention and has revived his “maximum pressure” campaign against Tehran. This includes efforts to restrict Iran’s oil exports and prevent it from developing nuclear weapons.
The US has also imposed sanctions on individuals accused of laundering proceeds from Iranian petroleum and petrochemical sales through unofficial financial networks.
Pakistan, meanwhile, continues to advocate dialogue over confrontation and has urged all sides to return to negotiations to prevent further escalation.
