ECP Suspends Membership of 159 Lawmakers Over Missing Financial Statements

National Assembly Key New Bills
Islamabad, January 16, 2026: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has suspended the membership of 159 lawmakers across national and provincial legislatures for failing to submit their financial statements. The decision was announced through an official notification on Friday.
The suspension includes 32 members of the National Assembly (MNAs), 50 Punjab Assembly lawmakers, 33 Sindh Assembly members, 28 Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly members, seven Balochistan Assembly lawmakers, and nine Senators.
Among the notable figures suspended are Sindh Assembly Speaker Syed Awais Qadir Shah, Federal Education Minister Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, PPP leaders Syed Ali Musa Gilani and Syed Abdul Qadir Gilani, and PML-N MNA Saira Tarar. Senators affected include Dr Musadik Malik, Abid Sher Ali, and Murad Saeed.
The move follows a warning from the ECP, which had asked all lawmakers to submit their assets and liabilities statements by January 15, 2026, failing which they would face suspension. Lawmakers are required to submit details of their own financials, as well as those of their spouses and dependent children.
Suspended members cannot attend assembly sessions, participate in legislative business, or vote on motions of confidence until they file the required statements. The decision underscores the ECP’s commitment to transparency and accountability among public representatives.
