Karachi families confused over 200-guest wedding rule

21 March, 2026 14:49

The Sindh government’s new rule limiting wedding guests to 200 has created uncertainty for families planning ceremonies, especially in Karachi.

The restriction is part of an austerity policy in response to the ongoing Middle East situation. The rules also include a one-dish policy for wedding events. While the government says it is meant to save resources, many families and business owners are concerned about its practicality.

Many families had already planned larger gatherings, sending invitations months ago and booking venues and catering services. Reducing guest lists now could cause financial losses and social difficulties.

Marriage hall owners have strongly opposed the decision. The Karachi Marriage Hall Owners Association called the restriction unrealistic and said it would be difficult to enforce. Officials agree that it is nearly impossible to control the exact number of guests at private events.

Industry representatives also argued that the rule may not significantly reduce fuel or energy usage, as weddings often already use centralized cooking and shared transport to save resources.

Families planning weddings have expressed frustration, saying they feel pressured and confused about whether to continue with their original plans. Many are worried about how to exclude relatives and friends from important life celebrations.

Concerns about implementation have also been raised. Ali Khurshidi warned that strict enforcement may not be practical and unclear rules could lead to misuse of authority by local officials.

Government sources say no clear enforcement plan has been finalized yet. A final decision on how the rule will be implemented is expected after the Eid holidays.
