Grizz Chapman Dead at 52: The Kidney Disease Battle, Wife Diana, and the Private Life Behind 30 Rock’s Beloved Star

23 May, 2026 14:35

Most fans knew Mack Chapman as the gentle giant on 30 Rock — Tracy Jordan’s loyal, soft-spoken bodyguard with perfect comic timing. What they did not know was that behind every scene, Chapman was waging a private medical war that lasted over a decade and ultimately ended his life at just 52.

He passed away peacefully in his sleep on May 22, 2026. His representative, Saideh A. Brown, confirmed the news to TMZ. No cause was initially disclosed — but the fuller picture came from family.

Kidney Disease: A Silent, Decade-Long Fight

Chapman’s cousin, Harlem Globetrotter Donte “Hammer” Harrison, provided the most honest account of what Grizz endured. According to Hello! Magazine, Chapman openly battled kidney disease for many years, spent an extended period on dialysis, and underwent a kidney transplant in 2010.

Kidney disease at that severity is relentless. Dialysis — often required three times weekly — is physically draining and life-altering. A transplant offers hope, but long-term immunosuppression and organ health monitoring become permanent realities. Chapman managed all of this while continuing to work in television.

Hammer’s tribute was direct and deeply personal: he described his cousin as someone who fought “with strength and dignity” and noted they had reconnected just two months before his passing — a detail that carries quiet emotional weight.

Diana Chapman: 23 Years of Silent Strength

Chapman’s wife, Diana, remains almost entirely outside public record — intentionally so. The couple married in 2002, building more than two decades of private partnership while Grizz navigated fame and illness simultaneously.

They have two children together, though neither their names, ages, nor genders have been confirmed publicly. Diana made no public statement following her husband’s death, which is entirely consistent with how she and Grizz chose to live: away from cameras, away from commentary.

That silence is its own form of dignity.

30 Rock’s Legacy and What Chapman’s Role Meant

30 Rock ran from 2006 to 2013, earning critical acclaim and a devoted audience. Chapman’s recurring role as “Grizz” — one half of Tracy Jordan’s inseparable bodyguard duo alongside Kevin Brown’s “Dotcom” — gave the show grounded warmth amid its absurdist humor.

Brown confirmed the death on Facebook, writing simply: “I regret to inform you that Mack Chapman aka Grizz Chapman passed today. May he RIP.” No elaborate tribute. Just grief, plainly stated.

A Legacy Defined by Quiet Resilience

Grizz Chapman’s story is one that Hollywood rarely tells — the working actor managing a chronic illness, protecting his family from public scrutiny, and showing up anyway. His death closes a chapter, but the transparency his family has now offered gives fans something real: not a polished memorial, but the truth of a difficult, dignified life lived fully.
