Section 144 Imposed in Diamer for 60 Days Ahead of GB Elections
Authorities in Diamer district of Gilgit-Baltistan have imposed Section 144 for a period of 60 days as the region prepares for the upcoming Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly elections, scheduled for June 7. The order took effect on June 5 and was issued by District Magistrate Diamer, Lieutenant (Retired) Muhammad Awais.
Officials described the situation in the district as sensitive, stating that the measure is intended to preserve law and order throughout the election period and ensure that polling proceeds peacefully.
Under the terms of the order, the carrying and public display of all types of weapons has been strictly prohibited. Aerial firing has also been banned. The use of fireworks and crackers is similarly not permitted, with officials noting that such activities pose a risk to public peace and safety.
In a notable security provision, the district administration has banned the operation of drones, quadcopters, and all other unmanned aerial vehicles within the district. Authorities cited the security risks these devices pose to sensitive installations and government facilities as the basis for the restriction.
Law enforcement personnel and individuals holding written authorisation from the district administration are exempted from the prohibitions. The notification made clear that any violation of the Section 144 order will result in strict legal action, and citizens have been urged to comply fully with the restrictions in place.
Officials warned that unauthorised use of drones, weapons, or fireworks could not only endanger public safety but also cause property damage and create fire hazards in the district.
The Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly had completed its term in November 2025. The elections were delayed from their original date due to severe weather conditions across the mountainous region, with June 7 eventually selected as the most practical window before the commencement of the Muharram period.
The district administration appealed to residents to extend full cooperation to law enforcement agencies and reminded the public that the security arrangements now in place across Diamer are aimed at guaranteeing a free, fair, and peaceful election for all voters in the constituency.
