Temple Funds Controversy Deepens Crisis for Modi Government and RSS

NEW DELHI: The Narendra Modi government and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) are facing renewed criticism after reports of financial irregularities surfaced in a temple trust in Uttarakhand following the controversy surrounding the management of Ram Temple funds.

The developments have intensified debate over transparency and accountability in religious institutions, with critics questioning the role of the BJP leadership in ensuring proper management of temple resources.

According to Indian publication The Wire, an investigation into an Uttarakhand temple revealed that temple funds were used for expenses linked to hosting VIP guests, raising serious questions over the handling of religious donations.

The report stated that an amount of Rs 60,000 was spent in the name of BJP state secretary Neha Joshi, further fueling criticism over the use of temple resources.

Opposition leaders have questioned how senior BJP leadership and the RSS can avoid responsibility over controversies involving religious institutions that have become central to their political narrative.

Congress leader Priyank Kharge demanded a public apology from the RSS over the Ram Temple funds controversy, while Communist Party leader Suryakant Pandey questioned the role of trust members in protecting temple resources from misuse.

Critics have also accused the BJP government of promoting religious politics while failing to ensure transparency in the financial affairs of major temples.

The controversy has also drawn criticism over Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s silence, with opposition figures arguing that the government must provide answers regarding the management of temple funds.

Political observers say the latest developments have created further challenges for the Modi government, which has built a major part of its political messaging around religious issues.

The growing criticism has intensified calls for independent investigations and greater accountability in the administration of religious trusts across India.
