Xi Jinping Calls for Global Cooperation and Stronger AI Governance

Chinese President Xi Jinping outlined four key principles for the development and governance of artificial intelligence while addressing the opening ceremony of the 2026 World AI Conference and High-Level Meeting on Global AI Governance. He called for greater openness, innovation, and international cooperation to promote the responsible development and application of AI technologies.

Xi emphasized the need to ensure AI remains secure, controllable, and under human oversight, while opposing the expansion of national security concerns into the AI sector. He also stressed that AI development should respect cultural diversity and promote mutual learning among civilizations rather than undermine the uniqueness of different societies.

Calling for stronger global governance, Xi urged countries to enhance coordination on AI strategies, standards, and regulations under the framework of the United Nations. He also emphasized expanding international cooperation to help Global South countries strengthen AI capabilities, bridge the digital divide, and ensure sustainable and equitable development.
