Iran Says Continued US Blockade May Shut Strait of Hormuz, Other Waterways

01 August, 2026 14:15

The secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council has warned that the continuation of a US maritime blockade could lead to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and other important waterways.

According to a statement carried by Iran’s state broadcaster IRIB, Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr said continued US “provocations” could further restrict movement through the Strait of Hormuz and may also result in the closure of other strategic maritime routes.

He warned that the impact of Washington’s actions could be felt by “the global economy, the energy market, and American voters.” His remarks appeared to refer to the US congressional elections expected in November, where rising prices and the ongoing conflict are major concerns.

On July 14, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced the reimposition of a maritime blockade on Iran under the direction of President Donald Trump.

Tensions between the United States and Iran have increased in recent weeks. The US has carried out strikes against Iran, while Tehran has responded by targeting US military facilities and equipment in the region.

Washington has called on Iran to stop attacks on commercial ships and ensure freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. Iran, however, has said that the movement of vessels through the strategic waterway should be managed through a system controlled by Tehran.
