Queen Camilla Makes Surprise Appearance at Letters Live in London

On Thursday evening the unexpected moment happened at London’s Royal Festival Hall when Queen Camilla surprising appearance amazed audiences.

She secretly took part in Letters Live, where she read deeply personal letter written by late queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother.

Most of the audience appeared unaware that she was part of the event, and when the queen appeared they responded with gasps and applause when she stepped onto the stage.

The letter, written by the Queen Mother in 1952, from the poet Edith Sitwell, after Sitwell sent her an collection of poems following King George VI’s death.

Written during a period of intense sorrow, the letter read, “I am deeply touched by your thought of me, I love being given books, and I send you my warmest thanks.”

It concluded with a brief message: “I am yours, very sincerely, Elizabeth R.”

It offered a glimpse of a grieving woman who found solace in a friend’s support and the comfort of a book.

Speaking to Elaine Bedell, chief executive of the Southbank Centre, Camilla revealed that she had been “terrified” before her stage appearance.

The event was attended by a number of celebrated performers, including Benedict Cumberbatch, Jessie Buckley, Olivia Colman, Simon Callow, Harriet Walter, Rob Rinder, Sara Pascoe, Daniel Kaluuya and Laurence Fishburne.

The evening also featured musical performances by Elbow and folk duo The Staves.

During the interval, Camilla met several performers in the artists’ bar, where Olivia Colman was quick to congratulate her and tell the Queen that she had “done a great job”.

Colman also said she appreciated the mystery surrounding the bombshell entrances.

She asked. “I love that they keep it a secret who’s coming out. Did you hear the shock when they heard it was you?”

Dressed in a graceful blue Fiona Clare robe, Camilla express thanks to Colman, Benedict Cumberbatch and his wife, Sophie Hunter, who assisted introduce the readers, telling them, “All of you were so terrific.”

Cumberbatch also presented some cheer, telling the Queen, “It’s a long walk to that lectern, but once you’re there it’s a lovely audience.”

Camilla then observed that many of the entertainers were using wireless headset microphones and jokingly said, “I’m upset I didn’t get to wear one.”

Sara Pascoe instantly linked in with a playful response, saying, “They didn’t dare mic you up maybe.”
