Delhi’s Madina Mosque Demolished During Shalimar Bagh Road Project

NEW DELHI: A demolition drive in Delhi’s Shalimar Bagh area has brought down portions of the Madina Mosque along with nearby residential structures as part of a road-widening project.

Indian media reported that the demolition operation was carried out late at night and continued into the early hours under heavy security deployment.

According to civic authorities, the action was part of efforts to clear structures falling within the road-widening alignment, with officials saying notices had been issued before the demolition.

However, members of the mosque committee and local residents raised concerns over the timing of the operation and said they were not given adequate time to remove belongings and religious materials from the mosque.

The demolition has triggered criticism from political and community figures, with opponents questioning the manner in which the action was carried out.

The incident has also renewed debate in India over the demolition of religious and residential structures during civic and infrastructure drives, particularly where local communities dispute the process followed by authorities.
