UNHRC Event Warns Millions Could Be Affected by Indus Waters Treaty Suspension

03 October, 2026 15:57

GENEVA: Experts at a United Nations Council meeting in Geneva have raised concerns over India’s water-related actions and their impact on Pakistan.

Speakers said India’s unilateral suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty was a violation of international law and called for respect for the existing legal framework.

The experts also called for the implementation of the Permanent Court of Arbitration’s August 2026 decision.

They said Pakistan, as a lower riparian state, is entitled to a regular and fair flow of water from the Indus River system.

The speakers warned that India’s water-related measures could pose serious risks to food security and agriculture in Pakistan, affecting millions of people.

They stressed that the Indus Waters Treaty is an internationally recognised legal framework and urged the international community to ensure that water agreements are respected.

The experts also said attempts to restrict Pakistan’s water rights could create risks for regional peace and stability.

The Geneva event highlighted calls for water justice and protection of Pakistan’s water rights, with participants urging the international community to support the implementation of international water agreements.
