US-Iran Deadlock Over Strait of Hormuz Despite Qatar-Mediated Talks

12 October, 2026 11:12

TEHRAN: Iran has described the US response to its seven conditions for ending the war and reopening the Strait of Hormuz as insufficient. Tehran has also said that relations between the two countries cannot return to their previous state.

Mohsen Rezaei, Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, said in a post on X that the United States had accepted some of Iran’s seven conditions. However, he said Washington’s overall response was not enough for Tehran.

Rezaei did not explain which conditions the US had accepted. His statement indicates that major differences remain between the two countries over a possible agreement.

Disagreement Over Strait of Hormuz

Rezaei criticised the United States, claiming that its naval fleet had failed to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. He also accused Washington of relying on what he described as smuggling to transport oil through the waterway.

He further criticised the US military strategy, making strong claims about its performance. However, the report did not provide independent confirmation of these allegations or details of the US response.

Iran’s Seven Conditions

According to the report, Iran presented a proposal containing seven conditions during a session of the United Nations General Assembly.

Tehran offered to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and restore normal maritime traffic within seven days if the United States accepted its demands.

The Strait of Hormuz is a major global route for oil shipments. The war between the United States and Iran, along with attacks on oil tankers, has severely disrupted shipping through the waterway.

US Response Delivered Through Qatar

Rezaei said the United States sent its response to Iran through Qatar. Qatar has played an important role in delivering messages and facilitating indirect diplomatic contacts between the two countries.

Despite the US acceptance of some conditions, Iran’s rejection of the overall response as insufficient suggests that further negotiations will be needed to reach an agreement.

Reopening the Strait of Hormuz and restoring normal maritime traffic remain key issues in the talks. According to the available report, no final agreement or immediate breakthrough has been confirmed.
