Rubio Warns of Global Energy Pressures Amid Russia Sanctions Debate
Washington: US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has justified the Trump administration’s decision to suspend certain Russia-related sanctions for 60 days, citing India’s importance as an ally and the difficulties of replacing Russian energy supplies in the short term.
Addressing reporters at Joint Base Andrews on Saturday, Rubio said the government was assessing the economic impact of applying sanctions and tariffs together, particularly as regional conflicts continued to disrupt energy markets.
Responding to criticism from Republican Senator Ted Cruz, who argued that the waiver would benefit Russian President Vladimir Putin, Rubio noted that the restrictions also affected countries such as India.
Rubio acknowledged that India had diversified its energy sources but said replacing Russian supplies immediately would be difficult. He described India as an important US ally and partner.
He also referred to the impact of the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, 3. Escalating tensions with Iran, disruptions along the Strait of Hormuz, and Houthi Militia strikes targeting Saudi Arabia. As per Rubio statement, these expansions were placing additional pressure on global oil and diesel prices and creating broader economic challenges.
Rejecting claims that allowing Russian diesel sales amounted to a concession to Moscow, Rubio argued that the fuel would find buyers regardless of US restrictions.
India has maintained that its energy purchases are driven by domestic demand, affordability and supply security. Russian crude oil has become a significant part of India’s energy imports since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
