Vance Discusses 2028 Presidential Bid, Iran Conflict and Fuel Prices
US Vice President JD Vance has said he has not yet decided whether to run for president in 2028, acknowledging that he may ultimately choose not to enter the race despite being widely seen as a potential successor to President Donald Trump.
During an hour-long town hall with CBS News journalist Tony Dokoupil in Michigan, released on Saturday night, Vance was asked whether there was a possibility he would not run for president.
“Of course there’s a chance,” he replied.
Vance described himself as someone who tends to delay major life decisions, adding that he would need to give the matter careful thought. He also pointed to his four young children and his wife, Usha Vance, who he said has never been particularly fond of politics but is committed to public service.
Trump has previously described Vance as his “most likely” Republican successor.
During the discussion, Vance also defended the administration’s economic and foreign policies. He blamed former President Joe Biden’s administration for failing to give sufficient attention to American manufacturing, while acknowledging that reversing the sector’s decline would take time.
Addressing the conflict with Iran and rising fuel prices, Vance admitted that gasoline prices were currently too high. However, he expressed confidence that costs would fall once the conflict ended.
“I recognize that gas prices are too high right now,” he said, adding that prices would come down after the conflict.
Vance also defended Trump’s approach to Iran, arguing that the United States had “in some ways … won decisively.” However, he acknowledged that the opposing side could still influence the outcome, saying “the enemy gets a vote here.”
He added that Washington was seeking a firm and final commitment from Iran not to rebuild its nuclear programme.
Vance also rejected allegations of corruption involving Trump, saying he had not seen “a single shred of evidence” that the president participated in or authorised such activities.
