Ban on social media on cards for U16 users

In a bold step to protect youth from potential harms, Australia is considering banning social media for U16 users.

The announcement was made by Prime Minister of Australia Anthony Albanese.

Under the move, the government is committed to introduce a legislation this year barring children from accessing the social media.

However, the specifics of how age verification will be implemented are yet to be disclosed.

He said that that the urgency of this initiative, citing the mental health consequences and online bullying that young people face.

“We have committed to introducing legislation before the end of this year for age verification to make sure that we get young people away from this social harm,” he said.

The proposal was well received by the parents and the opposition party as well.

This move aligns with global efforts, as several countries and U.S. states are also working on similar legislation to protect children from online harm.
